wedged conoid chair

redwood,
douglas pine

H18" x W20" x D20"

2023

a set of chairs inspired by traditional japanese technique called sewari kurfing. the conoid shape of the base was born out of form exploration while whittling. combined with a wedging method for a leg/back support, it creates a unique chair design.

in this work i continued developing a dialog between intuitive chainsaw carving of the log and controlled 30 degree kurf cut embedded into it with the fit-to-match leg. at the same time the burnt finish of the wedge is a conceptual decision to amplify the conversation between the two.
